What are soft skills and why are they important? Soft skills or lack of them can get you fired! In school, if you miss a day or two a month or go to class late won't materially affect your grade. At work, if you are late or absent 3 times, you will probably be fired. The habits you form over the years in school are important for success. Soft skills are personal traits and habits that help you succeed in work and life. What qualities would help make you a better employee or job candidate? An important soft skill is a strong work ethic. Are you motivated, conscientious and dedicated to getting the job done? School is an opportunity to practice these skills. Along with good communication skills and being a team player are more essential soft skills. Team sports and clubs are an excellent opportunities to learn how to be a team player. Speaking, listening and writing is another opportunity to practice communication skills. Problem-solving and self confidence is important characteristics of soft skills. How do you deal with problems? Are you good at solving problems? In school, math and science help you develop the skills to improve you problem solving skills. Are you confident enough to ask questions? These are leadership traits! Being positive and optimistic are important soft skills. No one wants to be around negative people! They can bring you down. One way to show this trait is to smile and be happy. Everyone likes happy people! How do you deal with change? Being flexible and adaptable are important soft skills. Attitude can get you through most of it. A willingness to adjust or change with the situation is also important.
The technical skills of your job whether you are a carpenter or doctor are important, but soft skills are equally important to succeed in your profession and life.
